Vitamin D – Important for sinusitis, rhinitis and asthma

Vitamin D has historically been known for it’s support of the bones and the ability to elevate moods.  Lately Vitamin D is highlighted for helping the immune system, especially in the cases of chronic rhinitis and sinusitis.  Chronic rhinitis is inflammation of the nose, whether by allergies, viruses or other irritants.  Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses from the same possible causes.  A recent study ( Curr Opin Allergy Clin Immunol. 2012;12(1):13-17. © 2012 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins) showed a marked deficiency in Vitamin D levels correlated with higher incidence of chronic nasal and sinus inflammation.  Because the mucosa of the inner ear, throat, nose, trachea and bronchioles are essentially the same, it is expected that the same correlation between Vitamin D deficiency and asthma will be found with further review of the literature.  It is recommended that all adults and some children have their Vitamin D levels checked, especially if  chronic congestion, allergies, asthma, and/or chronic respiratory and sinus infections are a concern.

  1. Oh my goodness! I have been suffering from sinus problems for years! In the last three months or so I developed asthma in addition to other “aliments”. I thought for sure it was my thyroid or some other auto immune issue. Had my vitamin d levels checked (among other checks) and I am deficient at 24. I have started a hefty load of vitamin d and notice I can breathe better, wow! Worth looking into!
